Domesticating The Swedish Approach for a Smoke-Free Society
Abstract

Tobacco-related diseases remain a significant public health concern globally, contributing to millions of deaths annually. In low- and middle-income countries, where access to healthcare services is often limited, the burden of tobacco-related illnesses is even more pronounced. Recognizing the urgent need to address this issue, the Institute for Liberty and Policy Innovation (ILAPI) organized a High Roundtable dialogue that focused on Tobacco Harm Reduction Strategies (THR).

This event brought together an array of professionals, including public health experts, policy analysts, legal practitioners, researchers, and other relevant stakeholders to explore innovative solutions aimed at reducing the harm caused by tobacco use. With particular emphasis on the lessons from Sweden, which has successfully lowered its smoking rates through the adoption of harm reduction strategies, the seminar also explored the potential for implementing similar approaches in Ghana.

Through a series of presentations and discussions, participants explored the efficacy of harm reduction products such as e-cigarettes, vaping, and snus, which offer smokers less harmful alternatives to traditional cigarettes. The economic, social, and legal implications of adopting these strategies were discussed, providing valuable insights for policymakers, healthcare professionals, and advocates for tobacco control.
