To start my ranting, I will first treat you to these figures from the 2010 Population Census, specifically on Religion. According to the census, these were the percentages; No Religion 5.3, Catholic 13.1, Protestant 18.4, Pentecostal/Charismatic 28.3, Other Christian 11.4, Islam 17.6, Traditionalist 5.2 Other 0.8. With these appreciating numbers, one will think that morality will significantly improve, paradoxically, we hear horrifying stories such as daylight robbery, destruction of environment, embezzlement of funds, thievery by politicians, stealing by civil servants, torture of house assistants or helps, internet fraud or “sakawa”, prostitution, drug abuse in the era of Tramadol abuse etc. It was sad listening to stories like a man pouring acid on his wife just because the wife doesn’t conceive a female child, well he may not have any knowledge on the science of X and Y chromosomes but ignorance is not an excuse of the law. It’s heartbreaking to see a story on GHone TV where primary school children lie on their stomachs to study, meanwhile a Ghana Education Service (GES) director embezzled GHC 68,000 meant for school children. Two days ago, it was reported on Ghanaweb news portal that two young men beheaded a 5 year old student and sold the head for GH 2,500. Not long ago, robbers now kill with impunity, daylight robbery and police station attacks. As a citizen I sometimes believe religion is a hoax if not a scam.
We go to mosque, church and other worshiping centers to praise our creator but still surrender to evil. Well, as a student of philosophy I sight with Karl Max when he said, "Religion is the opium of the people’’ It was translated from the German original, "Die Religion ... ist das Opium des Volkes" and is often rendered as "religion... is the opiate of the masses.". We often complain about unemployment but again I remember the words of C.S Lewis that “education without values, as useful as it is, seems rather to make man a clever devil”. If we want to develop as a Nation we must have conscience of positive attitude.
A yet to be telecast documentary TORTURED INNOCENT on Joy News will bring tears to the eyes of many. Innocent children were severely subjected to torture in the hands of guardians. Meanwhile these guardians go to church and mosques daily to pray; “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one…..” Only to come home and torture innocent souls, but, I know we still have positive men and women in society. Personally, I am not a Saint, I am a sinner too and we all pray God will have mercy on us. On the 6th of March, 2018, a 6 year old Nana Dorothy reignited hope in me. Dorothy upon seeing students sitting on floor to learn donated her money saving box of GH 160 to GHone TV to support in getting dual desk for the students. Let’s keep the debate alive and love one another.
